Empty oak Barrels weigh anything from 90 to 110 pounds depending on the size. Wine and whiskey barrels are primarily produced from French, American, or Hungarian oak – which can significantly affect how heavy these barrels are.
The density of American oak far exceeds the density of French oak; which means an empty wine barrel from France will weigh up to 20 pounds less than American.
But the empty barrel weight is also dependent on the size of the barrel since modern wine barrels range greatly in sizes and weight.
- The most popular barrel size is the Bordeaux-barrel size, which holds about 225L (59 gallons) of wine. These empty wine barrels weigh between 90 and 110 pounds.
- The Burgundy barrels are slightly larger with about 228L (60 gallons).
- For the production of whiskeys and cognac, the standard barrel size is about 300L (79 gallons) which allows for the perfect whiskey-to-oak ratio.
The sizes do increase significantly and some barrels can hold as much as 600L (158 gallons). This, however, is not common, as they are difficult to transport and require the wine to remain in the barrels for significantly longer periods.
So, depending on how much oak influence you want in the wine, and the style of wine is that you are aiming for, will determine what size of the barrel you choose.
